Several European organizations are actively trying to establish a method for determining nutrient profiles, with which foods will have to comply according to the Regulation No 1924/2006 of the European Community (on nutrition and health claims).
NutrientProfiling was created in order to classify foods into categories (namely, more- or less-healthful) as required by the European Commission Regulation (ECR) No. 1924/2006 in anticipation of the introduction of Nutritional Profiles. Depending on the composition of a specific food, one must be able to evaluate its possible impact on metabolism, given available scientific evidence.
NutrientProfiling is a system that considers the total composition of a food, for both macro- and micronutrients, and determines how much a foodstuff adheres to international guidelines for a healthy diet, on a scale from 0 to 10. The system provides several evaluation criteria depending on specific scientific rationale and guarantees the ability to perform evaluations on the composition of the product in order to quantify the impact of change on the final Nutritional Profile.
Simply, you just need to complete all the required information, that can be extracted from the nutritional label (for 100g) of any commercial food, such as energy, total and saturated fats, total carbohydrates and simple sugars, and number of vitamins and minerals that reach the 15% of Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA).
Once completed, you can compute a single macronutrient and micronutrient score (range 0-10) which, combined together with different scientific approaches (see the evaluation schemes), provide the final overall Nutritional Profile for that product.
